At first, Henry Hudson must have been very disappointed. He had not found the Northwest Passage to the Orient, as he had hoped. Instead, he had sailed into an inland sea almost the size of Alberta. However, his discovery gave the English direct access to the fur resources of a continent. The Bay, and the numerous trading posts along its shores, became the heart of the Hudson's Bay Company's fur empire.
